Four steps in the field

Stand at one corner
Open the app outdoors and wait until GPS quality shows good.

Walk the boundary
Keep the phone in your hand and walk along the edge. Pause at each corner.

Close the shape
Return to the first corner and tap Finish. Check the outline on screen.

Save and share
Name the survey, add the survey number if you know it, and share the PDF.
What phone GPS can and cannot do
A phone usually knows its position within about 3 to 5 metres under open sky. On a field of an acre or more that gives a useful estimate. On a small house plot the same error is a large share of the plot, so the app warns you and a tape measure will serve you better.
Land Area Survey estimates area from phone location data. It is not an official government, cadastral or legally certified survey.
- Measure under open sky, away from tall buildings and thick tree cover.
- Hold the phone, do not keep it in a pocket.
- Pause a few seconds at each corner.
- Walk the boundary twice and compare.
